On January 16, the event dedicated to the 20 January tragedy was held at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies. The event began with a minute of silence on the memories of the martyrs of the tragedy. 

Opening the event deputy director on scientific affairs, associate professor Alamdar Mammadov said that martyrdom on the way to the motherland was the peak of zeal, honor, and dignity. The crime committed against the people of Azerbaijan thirty years ago is in fact a terrible act of terror against humanity. In this tragedy 147 Azerbaijani citizens were brutally killed, 638 were wounded, 841 were arbitrarily arrested and as a result, the requirements of many international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were roughly violated.

National leader Heydar Aliyev praised the martyrdom and said:  “The heroism of the martyrs of January 20 is an example for the Azerbaijani people and for the Azerbaijani youth”. After the national leader Heydar Aliyev came to power, the tragedy was assessed at the state level, In March 1994, the National Council adopted a resolution  “About the tragic events in Baku on January 20, 1990".

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev always pays special attention to the immortalization of the memory of the martyrs of January 20, the glorification of their names, as well as the strengthening of the social protection of their families.

Then the correspondent member of ANAS Ibrahim Azizov, doctor of biological sciences Saftar Suleymanov, deputy director on common affairs Natig Allakhverdiyev spoke about this tragedy. They noted that every Azerbaijani must remember the black January tragedy and the memory of those who died that day.  At the end of the event, a short film dedicated to the 20 January was demonstrated.
