Head of the laboratory of Population Genomics of IMBB, Ph.D. in biology, Associate professor Nurmammad Mustafayev, and junior researcher of the same laboratory Zarintaj Rustamova were on a scientific trip in Istanbul University-Cerrahpasha, Institute of Forensic Sciences and Legal Medicine on 01.02.2022-10.02.2022. One of the research directions of the laboratory of Population genomics is the molecular genetic study of human remains- anthropological materials obtained from archeological excavations. Doing research in this direction requires the mastery of methods for the separation of ancient DNA from biological materials. The trip took place within the program project in the title "Creation of infrastructure for the development of new areas of genetic engineering in Azerbaijan, the application of genome editing methods in biomedical research and genome selection."

During the trip, got acquainted with a number of research methods, including the separation of DNA (as well as ancient DNA) from bone samples (conventional and automated express methods based on kits produced by QIAGEN and Promega corporations), DNA from mouthwash, and smears, development of an additional identification panel consisting of 43 loci located on different chromosomes using In / Del type mutated biallelic gene variants, determination of skin, eye and hair color to complete the restoration of an unknown person's facial structure (appearance), Nanopore sequencing method, chemical-toxicological and chromato-mass-spectrometric methods in identification issues.

During the trip, a meeting was held with the participation of the rector of the Institute of Forensic Sciences and Legal Medicine, Prof. Dr. Erdinch Ozturk, Director of the Department of Science prof. dr Emel Hulya Yuksakoglu, and other officials of the institute. The employees of IMBB also got acquainted with all laboratories of the Forensic Medicine Biology Specialization Department of the Presidency of the Forensic Medicine Institute. Joint talks of Prof. Dr. Emel Hulya Yuksakoglu and the head of the district Prof. Dr. Bestami Cholak plan to examine bone samples from archaeological excavations in Azerbaijan and Turkey as part of a joint project, and also to further expand ties between the three organizations.
