Correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, laureate of the award named after REA K.A. Timiryazev, laureate of the Global Energy Award, head of the Controlled Photosynthesis Laboratory of the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the international laboratory of Bionanotechnology of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, Suleyman Allahverdiyev.

The scientist noted that along with traditional energy, alternative, environmentally friendly energy sources are gradually being attracted to the economy. As a rule, within the framework of the concept of "ecological alternative energy sources", six of its most common types are considered: solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, and energy obtained as a result of processing biomass into molecular hydrogen and biofuel energy. Of the alternative energy sources listed above, solar energy seems to be the most promising, since the energy of the Sun is inexhaustible. The natural process of converting solar energy into other types of energy is natural photosynthesis. Photosynthetic organisms learned to convert the energy of sunlight into the energy of useful chemical compounds about 3.5 billion years ago. Today, a lot of work is being done to improve and create new, alternative ways of producing hydrogen. The future of mankind lies in the use of sunlight, water and an efficient catalyst to produce cheap and environmentally friendly molecular hydrogen.
