Garib Murshudov, head of the International Laboratory of Computational Structural Biology of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, turns 60 Dec 19, 2022 | 15:52 / Anniversaries

On December 19, Garib Murshudov, the head of the International Laboratory of Computational Structural Biology of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of the RA MSE, professor of the University of Cambridge, head of the Computational Structural Biology Group of the Molecular Biology Institute of the Medical Research Council (MRC) located in Cambridge, turns 60.

Garib Novruz Murshudov was born on December 19, 1962 in Shamkir district. In 1980, he entered the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics of Baku State University, and in 1985 he graduated from that faculty with an honors diploma. By appointment, he came to the Biotechnology group of the Physico-Chemical Biology Sector headed by Academician Jalal Aliyev, and after a year and a half of preparation, he was sent to Moscow, to the Institute of Crystallography of the AS of the USSR. He worked at the Russian Institute of Crystallography in 1987-1993. In 1993, he successfully defended his thesis on "The three-dimensional structure of the enzyme catalase isolated from Micrococcus lysodeikticus with 1.5 A resolution" and received the scientific degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences. G. Murshudov worked at York University in Great Britain in 1993-2011. Since 2011, he has been working as a group leader at the MRC Molecular Biology research institute, Cambridge. Professor Garib Murshudov's "Macromolecular X-ray crystallography and protein database: collection and use of reliable information" is one of the most cited materials on bioinformatics. With this book, the scientist was able to prove to Europe that bioinformatics is the pinnacle of modern biological science. His field of interest is the application of mathematics and computer science in molecular biology and mainly in the study of the X-ray crystal structure of macromolecules. His programs are widely used by researchers dealing with the structure of macromolecules. Garib Murshudov is the author and co-author of more than 60 scientific articles, books, and collections. In general, the number of references to his articles, including his programs, is more than 20,000.

On April 21, 2022, he was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Scientist" by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for his achievements in the field of Science and services to the development of the Azerbaijani diaspora.

We congratulate teacher Garib on his jubilee and wish him good health and success in his scientific activities.

Best regards,

The staff of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies.
