Zarintaj Rustamova, a junior researcher at the Population Genomics Laboratory of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, participated in an archaeological expedition in the Gakh region under the leadership of Ph.D. Taleh Aliyev. During the excavation, in the area called Laleli, on the banks of the Ganikh River, the walls of the castle called Torpaggala, which is surrounded by the river and steep rocks on 3 sides were discovered. Pottery belonging to the ancient period was found in the upper layer and those belonging to the Late Bronze Age were found in the lower layer. Various animal bones were also discovered. The materials found show that the age of the castle is much older than expected. During the excavation, a large amount of charcoal was found, which suggests that the fortress was burned down during an enemy attack. During the expedition, many underground pit graves were discovered in the back of the castle. Tooth samples were taken for molecular biological research from two graves opened during the archaeological excavations in 2022 in the Gypchagtepe area of the region.
