Allahverdiyev is a world-renowned specialist in the physico-chemical and experimental biology of plants. He has made significant contributions to the study of the fundamental processes of photosynthesis, as well as the mechanisms of photocatalytic conversion of solar energy in plants. S.Allahverdiyev is one of the main scientists who discovered and proved the participation of the pheophytin molecule in the process of electron transfer in the reaction center of Photosystem 2, and also determined that there are 4 manganese atoms in the donor part of Photosystem 2. In recent years, his scientific interests are related to the study of artificial photosynthesis and hydrogen energy.
