Future of mankind depends only on the development of science and technology Apr 07, 2020 | 17:45 / Important events

The head of the research team at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious universities in the UK, our compatriot Professor Garib Murshudov spoke about studies of the coronavirus pandemic and measures to combat the virus in the country in which he lives.

Speaking about his current activities, the scientist said that every week he communicates with his scientific group via the Internet and conducts discussions with each member of the group separately, using the “zoom” or “skype” programs. Noting that there are fairly accurate mathematical models of epidemics, the professor brought to the attention that the main problem is how many people the patient can infect. If this number is more than one, it can be considered an epidemic.

“The coronavirus has demonstrated the importance of science,” said Garib Murshudov, adding that during a pandemic, any kind of analysis is difficult. However, if we compare it with the Spanish flu, we will see that people, science and medicine are better prepared to fight the current infection.

The professor said that the future of mankind depends only on the development of science and technology. Each country and the whole world must invest more and more in the development of science than we are doing now in order to be more prepared for such disasters in the future. The likelihood of a recurrence of such epidemics or pandemics in the future is high.

He noted that distance learning is currently used in all educational institutions in the UK. According to the scientist, at present, scientific institutions conduct experiments only in connection with the coronavirus pandemic: “For example, some experimenters at our institute are developing rapid tests, as well as studying the structure of the virus and finding ways to combat it.”

Addressing his compatriots, the Azerbaijani scientist urged them to be patient and disciplined during the quarantine period, not to follow false information and trust only official information. He noted that in such emergencies, the dissemination of false information could lead to additional disasters.
