Scientists created luminous plants May 13, 2020 | 15:14 / Interesting information

Scientists from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences along with their colleagues from the Institute of Science and Technology of Austria genetically engineered plants that glow brightly in the dark. Over the past 30 years, scientists have tried to create luminous plants. For these purpose, they used bioluminescent systems of animals or bacteria that already existed in nature and tried to “to instill” the luminescent properties to representatives of the plant world. However, so far it has not been possible to create plants that could radiate light throughout their life. Scientists have identified the gene responsible for the glow of the fungus Neonotopanus nambi and found that it is a derivative of caffeic acid, an organic molecule that plants need to build cell walls. As a result, two genetically modified types of tobacco Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana benthamiana were created that emitted a stable, green aura visible to the naked eye.
