On 8 November 2018, an event dedicated to the “Flag Day” was held at the Institute of  Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies. Opening the event deputy director on scientific affairs  PhD Alamdar Mammadov underlined the importance of today, the fact that our people value the flag and protect it. He said that The Azerbaijani Democratic Republic adopted the Azerbaijani tricolor as the national flag of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 9 November 1918. The flag was flown until 1920 when Azerbaijan became part of the Soviet Union. It wasn't until 1991, and the break up of the Soviet Union, that the Azerbaijani flag flew once again when the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan Republic announced a tricolor flag with a star and a crescent as the national flag of Azerbaijan on 5 February 1991. The state flag is a symbol of Azerbaijan's national sovereignty and to highlight its importance to Azerbaijan, on 17 November 2009, President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to declare 9 November as National Flag Day and a legal holiday.

Then, the leading researcher of  Plant biotechnology laboratory PhD Sadagat Asadova spoke about the old history of Azerbaijani flag. She noted that the flag is a symbol of sovereignty for every country. She added to her speech that famous writer, professor Ali bey Huseynzade is the author of the tricolor flag with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star.

The specialist of the Education Department mentioned that our flag was protected bravely by our soldiers in the Karabakh war. At the end of her speech, G.Bayramova said poem  “Bayraq da var, bayrağı qoruyan oğullar da var”.

Azerbaijan didn’t gain its independence easily. Too much blood has been shed, too many people have been killed for the waving flag. The flag should be a source of pride for every Azerbaijani. Today Azerbaijani flag is raised in the most prestigious chairs of the world. Currently, the flag of Azerbaijan, which is 162 meters high, is the highest flag in the world. It is the duty of all the Azerbaijani people to hold this flag high.
