| Key scientific achievements | The phenological and morphophysiological characteristics, productivity, drought tolerance and sensitivity, yield stability, plasticity, and adaptive capacity of winter bread wheat were comprehensively investigated under different water supply conditions, and traits applicable for breeding programs were identified. Under conditions of severe water deficit, an inverse correlation was observed between plant height and the drought susceptibility index (DSI). Under drought stress, a significant negative correlation was determined between flag leaf area and both grain yield and spike number per unit area. Under water deficit conditions, late-heading genotypes exhibited a reduced duration of flag leaf greenness (stay-green period). However, in some late-heading genotypes, a prolonged stay-green period was associated with higher physiological resilience. Differences were observed in the photosynthetic gas exchange parameters of winter bread wheat genotypes under water-limited conditions. Drought stress increased the remobilization of assimilates synthesized prior to the reproductive phase compared to conditions with adequate water supply. Under rainfed conditions with insufficient moisture, a strong positive correlation was found between the stress tolerance index (STI) and yield, whereas no correlation was observed with the drought susceptibility index. Based on the results of long-term studies, it was established that under rainfed conditions with limited moisture, winter bread wheat genotypes differ in heading time, plant height, and in yield stability, plasticity, and adaptive capacity. |
