| Key scientific achievements | For the first time, a comparative analysis of oxidative stress enzymes was carried out in the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina under conditions of high salt concentration. Data were obtained indicating a relationship between the increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the de novo synthesis of some of their isoenzymes. The antioxidant defense systems were thoroughly investigated at all phases of ontogenesis in wheat genotypes exposed to prolonged soil drought. For the first time, three new isoforms of ascorbate peroxidase and four new isoforms of glutathione reductase were identified in wheat leaves as a result of changes in genome expression occurring under stress conditions. It was demonstrated that Mn-SOD plays an important role in the detoxification of superoxide radicals in plants under drought conditions, and the use of these enzymes as markers of drought tolerance in the selection of stress-tolerant cultivars was proposed. As a result of complex biochemical and ultrastructural analyses carried out on wheat cultivars contrasting in drought tolerance, it was established that plants tolerate stress by regulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes (APX, CAT, GR, SOD, GPO), and the changes occurring in the ultrastructure of leaves are determined by stress response reactions. Under the influence of drought, chloroplasts and mitochondria undergo damage of varying degrees depending on the cultivar. The internal organization of chloroplasts becomes disrupted, and in susceptible cultivars the ultrastructure of mesophyll cells is destroyed. |
