October 18 is the Day of Restoration of Independence Oct 18, 2021 | 07:12 / Important events

Azerbaijan gained state independence at the beginning of the 20th century. The people of Azerbaijan, who established the first democratic republic in our country in 1918, were deprived of national freedom and state independence as a result of subsequent socio-political changes. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the people of Azerbaijan regained their state independence. On October 18, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the Constitutional Act on State Independence, which was approved by a nationwide vote and referendum on December 30, 1991. With this act, the legal basis for ensuring the state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan was created, and our country declared its state independence to the whole world. The state independence of our republic has been recognized by all countries of the world, Azerbaijan has joined the United Nations and has become a member of major international organizations. Over the past years, the Independent Republic of Azerbaijan has undergone great ordeals and strengthened. Preservation of the gained independence, strengthening of the prestige of Azerbaijan as an independent state among the world states is connected with the name of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. At the first session of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1991, our national leader noted that the land issue was a key issue in the history of our people: “For centuries, the concept of the homeland has reflected the dignity, ego, and honor of our people. The Azerbaijani people fought to protect the sanctity of their land. Our ancestors protected every inch of the Motherland as a symbol of honor, they did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives and the lives of their children for it.” We are proud that our President Ilham Aliyev continues the policy and ideas of our National Leader with great success. We see these successes in all areas of our lives, and the military field is no exception. The fact that we ended the 44-day Second Karabakh War with a glorious victory and the actual surrender of Armenia is a clear example of this. Today, we can say with great pride that we already own our destiny, our country, and the state independence of Azerbaijan is eternal and permanent.
