Every success should serve as a bridge to the next one, and young researcher Edgar Shahbazov has reached all his achievements this way. His endless curiosity for biochemistry is the main driving force behind his progress. Edgar, born in Qusar on April 9, 2002, received his secondary education at School No. 1 named after Bahruz Agaverdiyev. From childhood, his parents supported his learning by providing him with many books, which shaped his broad outlook. His mother, a linguist, taught him English and Russian, while his father, an entrepreneur, always encouraged his education. At school, Edgar’s teachers noticed his talent for memorizing complex formulas and trusted in his scientific future. In 2019, he won the regional stage of the Republican Chemistry Olympiad, proving his abilities early on. That same year, he graduated from school with excellent marks and was admitted to the Faculty of Biology at Baku State University. He completed his bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 91 and his master’s with 99.4, defending his dissertation with the highest score. In 2023, Edgar joined the BSU–Hebrew University of Jerusalem dual degree program in Biotechnology within the framework of a state program. Together with his supervisors, he studied the role of calcium ions and transcription factors in the salt tolerance of the cotton variety “Garabag-11.” His interests also expanded to neurodegenerative diseases, which are common in Azerbaijan, and he decided to research them. In 2025, he was admitted to the PhD program in Molecular Biology at the University of Manchester. His doctoral research will focus on the new role of the RBBP5 factor in maintaining mitochondrial balance during aging. With determination and patriotism, Edgar dreams of establishing a modern biochemistry research and treatment center in Azerbaijan.
