Edgar Shahbazov is one of the scholarship holders of the State Program on Education of Young People in Prestigious Foreign Universities for 2022–2028. He began his academic journey at Baku State University, where he graduated in Biology with high distinction. His diploma work focused on the biochemistry of antibiotics and their biotechnological production. Later, he joined a dual degree program between Baku State University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His master’s dissertation was carried out at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies under the supervision of academician Irada Huseynova. Together with Israeli researchers, he studied genes responsible for cotton’s resistance to drought and soil salinity. This research laid the foundation for creating more resilient cotton varieties in Azerbaijan. Edgar then received offers for doctoral studies from Oxford, Edinburgh, and Manchester universities. He chose the University of Manchester, where he currently researches the role of the RBBP5 gene in neurodegenerative diseases. He emphasizes that science is a continuous path, linking plant genetics with human health. According to him, the State Program opened doors to world-class education and research opportunities. He considers hard work, balance between intellect and effort, and strong national identity as keys to success. Edgar highlights the vital role of family support, inspiring teachers, and academic mentors in his achievements. He believes that educated youth have a social responsibility to contribute to their country’s progress. His future goal is to return to Azerbaijan, establish advanced research centers, and strengthen international scientific cooperation.
