The annual water resources of rivers in the Karabakh economic region amount to 831.7 million cubic meters. In East Zangezur, this figure is 1,622.6 million cubic meters. The river waters of these territories account for approximately 24 percent of the country’s internal water resources. This was stated by Irada Huseynova, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and Acting Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology under the Ministry of Science and Education, during a meeting of the Working Group on Environmental Issues held in the Zangilan district on March 13. According to her, out of the 623 existing kahrizes, 332 remained under occupation for nearly 30 years and have fallen into disrepair: “Restoration work has begun in the Jabrayil district. However, a concerning issue is the problems related to water sources in the kahrizes. These need to be studied, their causes identified, and appropriate measures taken.” Huseynova also noted that the book “Flora of Karabakh” was published at the end of last year, adding that scientific research has identified 1,797 species of higher plants, 252 species of lower plants, and 341 species of fungi in Karabakh and East Zangezur.
