On March 30, a virtual dialogue on international scientific cooperation “Open Science” on coronavirus infection (COVID-19) was organized at UNESCO headquarters with the support of the Natural Sciences Sector with the participation of more than 200 ministers of health, science and education from more than 120 member countries. Azerbaijan was first represented at an online dialogue of this format and scale by ANAS vice-president academician Irada Huseynova.

The purpose of the event was to provide a platform for dialogue and exchange of experience between academia around the world. It was noted that resolving this problem required the participation of all countries.

During the meeting, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay spoke about the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, the joint struggle of all countries against the virus and the upcoming important problems.

Shamila Nair-Bedouellel, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, said the COVID-19 pandemic reminded people of the important role of science playing in responding globally to existing threats and challenges. She said governments around the world are urging academia to take steps to protect their people, prevent the spread of the virus, and fight the pandemic.

During the online dialogue, ministers from different countries informed about the current situation in their countries, the discussions held and the work done, as well as about the steps that need to be taken in this direction in the future.

The event discussed issues such as preventing the spread of a pandemic, screening infected people, diagnosing the disease and disseminating information on the achievements made in treating infected patients to other countries through the World Health Organization, and assisting developing countries, especially in Africa. Recommendations were given on joint collaboration in the development of drugs and vaccines.
