The coronavirus pandemic, which has taken home almost the entire world, will end when a large part of the population is ill with it. This is assured by the chief scientific associate of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Hamalei, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Felix Yershov. “A pandemic will decline when 70-80% of the population has immune protection against coronaviruses,” the scientist said in an interview.
According to the academician, a vaccine has not yet been created, its role is played by healthy carriers of the virus - those same "asymptomatic" patients. They create the so-called "collective immunity." “On the one hand, it would seem good, but on the other it is very dangerous,” explains Yershov, “because carriers infect both old and chronically ill people, and these people cannot withstand such a viral load. They die first. The vaccine, of course, is safer, but it is not yet. "
Nevertheless, the academician is sure: the pandemic has already begun to decline. According to Yershov’s forecast, by the fall it will seem “just scary to sleep.”
