An event dedicated to the “9 May-Victory Day” was held at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs, PhD Alamdar Mammadov said that during the Second World War, the Azerbaijanis showed great heroism not only on the front-line, but also in the rear. 650 thousand Azerbaijani citizens were sent to the war and 420 thousand of them did not return. 43 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for their unprecedented courage and 30 were awarded the Order of Glory in all three degrees. Other employees of the Institute emphasized that Baku oil is one of the main factors of the victory over fascism. Thanks to the selfless labor of oilmen, 23.5 million tonnes of "black gold" were produced in 1941. This accounted for 71.4 percent of all oil produced in the USSR. During the war years, Azerbaijani oilmen supplied 75 million tonnes of oil, 22 million tonnes of gasoline and other oil products to the country. All these statements confirm indisputable role of Azerbaijan in the victory over German fascism.
