An international training course and seminar dedicated to “New selection technologies for food and nutrition safety” was held at Middle East Technical University, Ankara.

The event was co-organized by the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, and Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC. The purpose of the event was to create institutional capacity and human resources of OIC member states to achieve the abundance of food and food safety through the application of new selection technologies in agriculture.

The international event consisted of "Training on genome editing vectors and protocols for wheat, rice, and potatoes", “Workshop on the development of a roadmap for the commercialization of new plant varieties and their inclusion in the elite gene pool of food crops.

At the opening of the seminar, the Ambassador of Pakistan to Turkey, Mr. Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Gazi, Rector of METU, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Vershan Kok, General Coordinator of COMSTECH, prof. Dr. Muhammad Igbal Choudhary, Director of the Programs and Projects Office of IOFS, prof. Dr. Ismail Abdelhamid and Director General of COMCEC Fatih Unlu also attended.

The event was attended by five members of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of ANAS (Executive Director of the Institute, Ph.D. Alamdar Mammadov, Head of the International Laboratory of Proteomics, Ph.D. Ismail Zulfugarov, leading researcher, doctor of biological sciences Shahniyar Bayramov, young researchers Lala Aydinli and Turana Iskanderova), one employee of the Azerbaijan Medical University and two employees of the "Nargiz" clinic. Representatives from Azerbaijan made a scientific report at the event and were active in all discussions.

In addition to getting acquainted with scientists working in the field of genome editing, preliminary talks were held between their research centers and research institutes in Azerbaijan on cooperation, staff training, development of joint projects, obtaining grants from various European scientific foundations. At the same time, it was agreed to send several employees of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies to long-term training courses with the financial support of COMSTECH to learn more about CRISPR-Cas technology.
