In 1917-1918, the intensification of Armenian aggression put Azerbaijani Turks in danger of physical destruction. Such a situation demanded an urgent start of army building. The creation of the Azerbaijan National Army was started with the decree dated June 26, 1918. On August 1, the Military Ministry of The Azerbaijan People's Government was established. Talented General Samad Bey Mehmandarov was appointed the Minister of Military and Lieutenant General Alagha Shikhlinski the Deputy Minister on December 25. The Azerbaijani army had talented generals such as Huseynkhan Nakhchivanski, Ibrahim agha Usubov, Hamid Gaitabashi, Kazim Gajar, Javad bey Shikhlinski, Habibbey Salimov.

Only when Heydar Aliyev came to power in 1993 and was elected the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, important measures were taken in the field of army establishment in our republic. President, Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, who successfully continued Heydar Aliyev's policy in all fields, made a great contribution to the development of the army. Today, the Azerbaijan National Army, which is considered the most modern army in the Caucasus, consists of Air and Air Defense, Navy, and Land forces. These types of troops are able to fight effectively against the enemy. Within the CIS, Azerbaijan is considered one of the strongest countries with air defense forces. Ilham Aliyev as the Commander-in-Chief developed high combat determination, love for the country, and the quality of self-sacrifice in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan which was manifested in the 44-day Patriotic War. Armenia knelt before the diplomatic policy of the President of Azerbaijan, its powerful army, and brave soldiers! The people of Azerbaijan are already proudly celebrating the Army Day. Now the protection of our land is in safe hands.
