Every year in Azerbaijan, May 9 is celebrated as Victory Day over fascism. During the years of the Great Patriotic War, our people showed great examples of heroism and valor both in the front and rear. More than 600,000 sons and daughters of Azerbaijan went to the front in the war. Azerbaijani divisions passed the glorious battle path from the Caucasus to Berlin. Our compatriots fought bravely and skillfully far away from the borders of their native Azerbaijan and protected the land of Azerbaijan. More than 170,000 Azerbaijanis were awarded orders and medals, and 130 people were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. It can be said that Baku oil was one of the main factors in the victory over fascism. During the war, four out of every five planes, every five tanks, and every five cars ran on Baku petrol. The great leader, Heydar Aliyev, greatly appreciated the services of the veterans of the 1941-1945 war and emphasized that they deserved all kinds of care and respect.  This political course of the national leader was successfully continued by his worthy successor, President Ilham Aliyev. In our country, war veterans are treated with great attention and care, and consistent steps are taken to strengthen their social protection.
