On May 28, 1918, a secular, parliamentary independent democratic republic was established for the first time in the Muslim East. The first Parliament and Government of Azerbaijan, the state apparatus were organized, the borders of the country were determined, the flag, anthem and coat of arms were created, the mother tongue was declared the state language and serious measures were taken in the field of army building. The first university of Azerbaijan was founded, and significant works were done in terms of the history of public opinion, which laid the groundwork for the cultural advancement of the people in the following years. Azerbaijan, which lost its independence during the Soviet empire, regained its independence by adopting the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" at the session of the Supreme Soviet on October 18, 1991. Today, every Azerbaijani feels proud. Azerbaijan's territorial integrity has been totally restored thanks to the valiant efforts of our National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, who is the guarantor of our freedom. We are sure that our people will achieve new successes and achievements, will advance in the direction of protecting our independence, developing and strengthening our statehood.
