May 28 – Independence Day May 27, 2025 | 09:00 / Important events

May 28 is a day of exceptional historical significance for the Azerbaijani people. On this day in 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was declared, marking the first time our nation exercised its right to establish an independent state. This event was not only groundbreaking for Azerbaijan but also for the entire Muslim East – as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic became the first secular, democratic republic with a parliamentary system in the region.

Despite its short lifespan of only 23 months, the Republic made important strides in building a national state. The Azerbaijani language was declared the state language, a national army was established, a national currency was introduced, and the first university – Baku State University – was founded. Additionally, by granting women the right to vote, Azerbaijan outpaced many European countries.

However, the Bolshevik occupation in 1920 interrupted this path to freedom. Though independence was lost, the desire for sovereignty never faded. This aspiration lived on in the national memory and was passed down through generations. Finally, in 1991, Azerbaijan regained its independence. This time, the people were supported by a strong leader – National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Thanks to his visionary policies, rich statehood experience, and wisdom, the young republic was saved from chaos and fragmentation and established a solid foundation for statehood.

The protection and strengthening of our independence is closely linked to his name. Today, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan has grown even stronger, its international standing has increased, and its territorial integrity has been restored.

May 28 is not just a historical date – it symbolizes the unbreakable will of a nation, the determination to take ownership of its destiny, and the right to live independently. Today, we take pride in being free, independent, and strong. We take pride in being citizens of Azerbaijan!
