Professor Suleyman Ifkhan Allahverdiyev, a prominent figure in global photosynthesis research and a distinguished representative of Azerbaijani science, celebrates his 75th birthday. He is a graduate of the scientific school of academician Jalal Aliyev and is recognized internationally for his outstanding achievements. Born on August 1, 1950, in Chaykend village of the Karakoyunlu Valley, Western Azerbaijan, he later joined the ranks of scientists who made significant contributions to world science. After graduating from the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University in 1973, he began teaching in his native village but soon continued his scientific career at the Institute of Photosynthesis of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He earned his PhD in Biophysics in 1984 and a Doctor of Biological Sciences degree in 2002 under the mentorship of world-renowned scientists A.A. Krasnovsky and V.V. Klimov. Professor Allahverdiyev’s research has significantly advanced our understanding of Photosystem II, clarifying the role of pheophytin as a key intermediary in electron transfer and revealing the molecular basis of oxygen evolution involving four manganese atoms. His findings are included in leading global textbooks on photosynthesis. Beyond classical mechanisms, he works in bioenergetics, artificial photosynthesis, molecular hydrogen technologies, and nanobiotechnology, achieving fundamental results in creating artificial photosynthetic systems. These studies contribute to sustainable energy solutions. His career is marked by extensive international collaboration in over 40 countries, with visiting professorships in Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Turkey, India, France, Germany, Australia, and more. He has authored nearly 500 scientific articles, 7 patents, and 12 books, with around 32,500 citations, an h-index of 89, and an i10-index of 337. Professor Allahverdiyev has served on editorial boards of prestigious journals such as Photosynthesis Research, BBA-Bioenergetics, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, and others. He has supervised the training of multiple PhDs and Doctors of Science. His achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including the “Highly Cited Researcher” title by Thomson Reuters (2016), Scopus Awards Russia (2018), the K.A. Timiryazev Prize (2019), the Global Energy Prize (2021), and the N. Veziroghlu International Hydrogen Award (2024). In 2022, he received the honorary title “Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation” and the Russian Academy of Sciences’ 300th Anniversary Medal. According to Research.com, since 2022, he has ranked first in Russia in the “Plant Science and Agronomy” category and is listed among Stanford University’s top 1% of world scientists (2020–2024). Suleyman Allahverdiyev is not only a leading researcher but also a devoted teacher and an ambassador of Azerbaijani science on the global stage. On the occasion of his 75th anniversary, the Azerbaijani scientific community congratulates him wholeheartedly, wishing him good health and new scientific successes.
