ANAS General Meeting held a scientific session devoted to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Mendeleev's Periodic Table on May 1.

At the event, ANAS Vice-President, Director of the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry, academician Dilgam Tagiyev delivered a report on "The Periodic System of Chemical Elements is one of the fundamental laws of nature".

Academician said that, at the 39th General Conference of UNESCO, which was held on November 2017 in Paris, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Mendeleyev Russian Chemical Society had taken the initiative to declare 2019 the International Year of the Periodic System in honor of the discovery by D.Mendeleev in 1869 of the "Periodic Law of Chemical Elements". Supporting this initiative, the UN General Assembly declared 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements”.

Scientist spoke about the main reasons why the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements proposed by D.I.Mendeleev can be considered as a fundamental law of nature. He noted that, for a long time disputes over the ownership of the Periodic System had not abated. In some countries under the table did not indicate the name of D.I. Mendeleev, but despite this, no one dared to enter here the name of another scientist. Because the genius of D.I.Mendeleev was that, unlike his contemporaries, he left a place in the Periodic Table for still unknown elements and gave accurate predictions about their properties. The conformity of the properties of the new elements that were discovered in subsequent years with these forecasts indicated that the Periodic System was correct.

The speaker also stressed, the important role of the Periodic Table in research conducted in Azerbaijan in the field of target synthesis of inorganic functional materials, semiconductors and topological insulators, and spoke about the scientific results obtained in recent years at ANAS Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry in this field.
