In the Republic of Azerbaijan, November 9 is celebrated annually as State Flag Day. This holiday was established in 2009 by a decree of President Ilham Aliyev. On November 9, 1918, the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic adopted the tricolor flag – consisting of blue, red, and green – as a national state symbol. The blue color represents our Turkic heritage, the red symbolizes modernity and commitment to democracy, and the green reflects our belonging to Islamic civilization. The white crescent and eight-pointed star in the center symbolize the national identity and state independence of the Azerbaijani people. The flag of Azerbaijan is a symbol of both our freedom and national unity. Under this flag, our people have overcome great trials, restored independence, and successfully preserved it. Today, the State Flag is raised at all official buildings, educational and cultural institutions, and diplomatic missions of the country. Every year on November 9, official events, marches, and flag parades are organized in various regions of Azerbaijan. The State Flag Square in the capital Baku, along with its 162-meter-high flagpole, has become a symbol of our national pride. For the Azerbaijani people, this day is not only a celebration of a state symbol but also a tribute to freedom and love for the homeland. May our sacred flag never be lowered and always wave proudly!
