The role of artificial intelligence technologies at the current stage of biological science Jan 28, 2026 | 10:34 / Publications

Artificial intelligence has become a transformative force in modern biology, fundamentally changing research methodologies and accelerating scientific discovery. According to the Acting Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academician Irada Huseynova, AI technologies such as machine learning and deep learning enable rapid, multidimensional analysis of large-scale biological data. This shift toward data-driven research has increased analytical accuracy, research speed, and scientific productivity across genomics, proteomics, and other omics sciences. AI is now widely used for modeling, simulation, and prediction of biological processes, including cellular and tissue behavior. Breakthroughs such as AlphaFold have revolutionized structural biology by enabling highly accurate protein structure prediction, with direct applications in drug discovery and biomedical research. AI also supports personalized medicine by integrating genetic and clinical data to predict disease risks and optimize therapies. At the same time, ethical, legal, and data security frameworks must be strengthened to ensure responsible use of AI in biology. For Azerbaijan, state-level support for artificial intelligence creates significant scientific, economic, and strategic opportunities for advancing biological research.
