February 21 – International Mother Language Day Feb 21, 2026 | 11:00 / Important events

February 21 is celebrated worldwide as International Mother Language Day, established by UNESCO in 1999. The purpose of this day is to preserve linguistic diversity, promote the development of mother languages, and ensure their transmission to future generations. A mother language is one of the most important factors that embody a nation’s identity, cultural heritage, history, and moral values. The Azerbaijani language, with its rich vocabulary, expressive capacity, and centuries-old literary traditions, is one of the main pillars of our national existence. In the Republic of Azerbaijan, the state language is Azerbaijani, and its preservation, development, and promotion are among the priority directions of state policy. Protecting the purity of our mother tongue, using it correctly, and enriching it in scientific and literary contexts is the civic duty of each of us.

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, we congratulate everyone who loves, protects, and develops our mother language and wish that our language continues to live and flourish.
