March 31 – Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis Mar 31, 2026 | 11:00 / Important events

March 31 is commemorated in the history of Azerbaijan as a day of remembrance for one of the gravest tragedies committed against our people. On this day, the memory of thousands of innocent Azerbaijanis who lost their lives during the March 1918 genocide is honored with deep respect. In March–April 1918, large-scale massacres against the Azerbaijani population were carried out by Armenian armed groups in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba, Karabakh, Zangezur, and other regions. Civilians were brutally killed, and peaceful populations were subjected to mass violence. Historical sources confirm that tens of thousands of people were murdered, settlements were destroyed, and cultural heritage suffered severe damage during these events. A significant step toward the political and legal assessment of these tragedies was taken by Heydar Aliyev. By his decree dated March 26, 1998, March 31 was officially declared the “Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis,” and these events received state-level recognition. Today, the Azerbaijani people commemorate the victims of the genocide with deep sorrow and honor their cherished memory. Conveying these historical truths to the international community and preventing the recurrence of such tragedies is an important responsibility for all of us.
