On May 28, 1918, one of the most glorious pages in the history of the Azerbaijani people was written with the proclamation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic — the first democratic republic in the East. Although it existed for only 23 months, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic played an important role in the formation of national statehood traditions and in strengthening the ideals of freedom and independence among the people. During this period, state symbols were established, the Azerbaijani language was declared the state language, and significant steps based on democratic governance principles were taken. Progressive decisions for that era, such as granting women the right to vote, were adopted, and special attention was paid to the development of national education and science. Today, the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, as the successor to this historical heritage, preserves, strengthens, and successfully develops its state independence.
