Biologist-scientist: The discovery of new viruses is a significant achievement in the study of plant diseases + Photo Aug 04, 2026 | 23:30 / Important events

The use of resistance genes in combating plant diseases is an environmentally friendly and economically efficient approach. Research at the Institute focuses on developing disease-resistant genotypes and investigating viruses, phytoplasmas, and rust diseases. These studies also represent one of the priorities in the development of drought-tolerant crop varieties.

These remarks were made by PhD Samira Rustamova, Associate Professor and Leading Researcher at the Bioadaptation Laboratory of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Ministry of Science and Education, in an interview with AZƏRTAC. The scientist emphasized that research aimed at improving the disease resistance of agricultural crops and developing new varieties adapted to drought conditions is of great importance for ensuring food security. Although the widespread use of chemical pesticides has produced certain positive results in disease control, such methods may have adverse effects on human health and the environment. The use of resistance genes and resistant genotypes is therefore considered both an environmentally safe and an economically sustainable strategy.
