An article entitled “The Pride of the Turkic World” by Academician Irada Huseynova, Acting Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has been published in the newspaper “Azərbaycan”. The article discusses the life and scientific activities of Nobel Prize laureate Professor Aziz Sancar, with particular emphasis on his fundamental research in the fields of DNA repair and cell biology. His significant contributions to the study of the mechanisms involved in repairing DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, as well as the importance of these studies for cancer biology and medicine, are highlighted. Alongside the scientist’s Nobel Prize, his other scientific achievements, awards, and the activities of the scientific school he established are also covered. Particular emphasis is placed on Aziz Sancar’s contribution to the development of science and education in the Turkic world and his support for young researchers. The article also provides information about his ties with Azerbaijani science, particularly with the Institute of Molecular Biology, his visits to Azerbaijan, and his meetings with the academic community. In conclusion, based on Aziz Sancar’s principle that “Science should serve humanity,” the article highlights the importance of ensuring that scientific knowledge contributes to the development of society and humankind.
