On July 12, a conference was held on the topic “Green growth policy in the fight against global climate change”, organized jointly by the Sabail district organization of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan in connection with the 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

The event began with the performance of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan. The conference participants observed a minute of silence in memory of national leader Heydar Aliyev and our martyrs who died for the territorial integrity of our Motherland.

Then, a video dedicated to the founder of modern Azerbaijan, the founder of the "Yeni Azerbaijan" party, Heydar Aliyev, and COP29, which will be held in our country, was shown.

As Mukhtar Naghiyev, the chairman of the Sabail district organization of the Yeni Azerbaijan party, said, the birth of environmental policy in Azerbaijan is connected with the name of the national leader Heydar Aliyev. Thanks to the concern of the Great Leader about the country's ecology, thousands of trees were planted in our republic and green areas were created. "Today, this policy under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev has entered a new era and received further development. President Ilham Aliyev, who successfully continued all the works started by the Great Leader, issued a decree naming 2024 "Green World Solidarity Year”. The holding of COP29 in our country - one of the largest environmental events in the world - is a vivid confirmation of that," said M. Naghiyev.

Speaking at the event, the chairman of the Milli Mejlis committee on natural resources, energy and ecology, Sadyk Gurbanov, drew attention to the crises and difficulties occurring in the world. The speaker emphasized that the rapid continuation of environmental pollution can lead to the destruction of humanity in the course of 150-200 years. He noted that holding such a large and responsible event as COP29 in Azerbaijan is an indicator of the value attached to our country by the world community.

Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Vugar Kerimov noted in his speech that large-scale work is being done in Azerbaijan on greening and wastewater treatment. Only in Baku and on the Absheron peninsula, oil-contaminated areas have decreased by 10 times. "In the last years, 15 million trees were planted on 12 thousand hectares. 5 million trees are planned to be planted this year. Also, we are thinking of increasing the use of renewable energy sources by 30 percent by 2030 and we are working intensively in this direction," the deputy minister added. Vugar Kerimov noted that holding COP 29 in Azerbaijan is the result of a 55-year policy. Holding this event in Azerbaijan is a great responsibility for each of our citizens. The speaker spoke in detail about the work in the field of improving the environment, starting from the reign of the Great Leader and the activities carried out by President Ilham Aliyev, who is his worthy successor.

Vice-President of ANAS, Director General of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Academician Irada Huseynova welcomed the guests and said that the joint holding of today’s event is of particular importance. He spoke about the work done at this institute, founded by academician Jalal Aliyev, in connection with the green world, including photosynthesis. Academician Irada Huseynova noted that during the leadership of the Great Leader of Azerbaijan, he always focused on solving environmental problems, as well as, problems in all other areas. The brilliant leader always paid special attention to improving the environmental situation, protecting the environment, as well as the efficient use of natural resources. The policy of the Great Leader continues successfully today. The “Comprehensive Action Plan for 2006-2010 to improve the environmental situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan” was approved by the President in order to prevent factors that have a negative impact on the environment and improve the environmental situation in the country. 2010 was declared the “Year of Ecology”, decisions were made on alternative energy, and separate institutions were created. During the reign of Ilham Aliyev, the Red Book of Azerbaijan was published twice. At the same time, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP29, as well as the 19th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the 6th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement will be held in Azerbaijan in November this year. The unanimous decision of the world community to hold prestigious events in Azerbaijan is proof that Azerbaijan has established itself as a reliable partner in the world political arena and is actively playing a role in the UN and other international organizations. All this became possible as a result of the flexible policy and high personal reputation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, working for the sake of establishing peace and justice within the framework of international law. This decision is also evidence of the high appreciation by the world community of the policy formulated by the Great Leader and successfully implemented by Ilham Aliyev.

The head of the laboratory of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, representative of the 91s, corresponding member of ANAS Ibrahim Azizov, spoke about the work done under the leadership of academician Jalal Aliyev towards the creation of high-yielding, drought- and salinity-tolerant wheat varieties. The scientist provided information about the work currently being carried out in this direction and emphasized the importance of this research for ensuring the country's food security.

The director general of the Institute of Botany of MSE AR, doctor of Biological Sciences, professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva spoke about the work carried out in the institute for the study and protection of biodiversity, monitoring, carried out in the territories liberated from occupation, about the need to restore the ecological situation there. Emphasizing that one of the global problems that worries the world today is climate change, the speaker said that the main task of scientists is to further expand the research on ecological problems.

Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of MSE AR, PhD in biology Nargiz Bayramova spoke about the tasks facing young people in the framework of the "Green World Solidarity Year". She noted that the announcement by President Ilham Aliyev of 2024 as the "Green World Solidarity Year", as well as the holding of COP-29 in our country, once again confirm that Azerbaijan is one of the first countries to join global initiatives in this area and young scientists should also be at the forefront of global cooperation.
