Lectures on the specialty courses “Modern problems of biology” and “Methods of structural biology” for the 1st year master students have started at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, ANAS. The lecturer-professor Garib Murshudov is the leader of the Computer crystallography group of the Cambridge University of Great Britain and head of the laboratory of Computational structural biology of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, ANAS.

Garib Murshudov began his scientific activity at the department of Molecular-genetic bases of production processes headed by academic Jalal Aliyev and then he was sent to the Institute of Crystallography of USSR Academy of Sciences.

After defending his PhD thesis with great success, G.Murshudov was invited to the York University of Great Britain. In 2001 he won a research grant of  the prestigious Wellcome Trust funded 500,000 pounds and organized his group. In 2011 G.Murshudov was invited to Medical Research Council in Cambridge and since then he has been working at the Molecular biology laboratory as the leader of the Computational crystallography group.

Our compatriot has organized courses and seminars on biological crystallography and electron microscopy in more than 20 countries including Japan, India, United States, European Countries and South America.

Garib Murshudov is an author of over 100 articles, including those published in the journals Nature and Science. The results of his researches were presented in more than 60 scientific conferences. More than 45% of the information involved in Protein Data Base (PDB) is being analyzed using his programs. According to Google Scholar his researches are cited over 35,000 times and his h-factor is 47.

Since 2001 he has been a member of the Royal Statistical society of Great Britain and one of the executors of the Collaborative Computational Project Number 4 in Protein Crystallography (CCP4), which develops and distributes computer programs for crystallography.

Professor Garib Murshudov is one of our compatriots who makes great contributions to the Azerbaijan science. In 2009 and 2011, Garib Murshudov organized citywide scientific seminars and some unofficial workshops in Baku.

In 2010 along with Academic Jalal Aliyev he was a co-manager of the international scientific project, supported by the Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In 2017 the research program “Refinement and validation of macromolecular structures” was approved and financed by the Presidium of ANAS  (according to a resolution No 5/9, 15 Mart 2017) and the research on this project has started.

Garib Murshudov pays special attention to the training of the young researchers. Currently he is a supervisor of 3 PhD students and an academic adviser of one thesis for the degree of the doctor of biological sciences at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies.  He has been delivered lectures on “Methods of structural biology” for 3 years.
